“New York is the greatest city in the world.” – You have heard this line enough. Whether you agree or not, that line has been repeated in hundreds of movies and TV productions, and thus created the perception.
Well, New York can claim that title with the help of popular culture. Melbourne, with its own style, deserves the title “the best city in the world”. With a vibrant culture and art scenes, an enjoyable lifestyle, its love for coffee and food (sleek cafes and bars, unique laneway restaurants), and most importantly, its lovely people and high quality of life, there is no arguing why Melbourne has been consistently named “the most livable city” by The Economist. (2017 marks the 7th consecutive year that Melbourne has earned the title.)
Though Melbourne’s name is not said out loud on screen, which suits the ethos of the city anyway, it is the chosen filming location for several Hollywood movies. (All photos are from IMDb photo galleries.)
1. I, FRANKENSTEIN (2014)
It’s not obvious on screen, but the fantasy/action movie was almost entirely filmed in Melbourne. Several well known Australian actors joined the cast, including Jai Courtney, Yvonne Strahovski and Miranda Otto.

2. Knowing (2009)
The story takes place in an American town. However, a significant part of the movie was shot in Melbourne.
Remember the plane crash on the highway? That is the Geelong Ring Road.

And the elementary school at the beginning of the movie? That was filmed at Camberwell High School.

Other places featured in the movie include Melbourne Museum, Collins Street and a residence in Mount Macedon which was used for the “home and garden” scenes.
3. Where the Wild Things Are (2009)
The movie is a joint production between Australia, Germany and the US, and filming was mainly done in Melbourne. A dozen places in the city were chosen, such as Flinders, Little River, Mornington, Portland, Port Melbourne and Williamstown.

4. Ghost Rider (2007)
The fantasy/adventure movie starring Nicolas Cage was mainly filmed in Melbourne. Locations include Newport, Little River, Geelong and some others.

Melbourne residents might be able to recognize a few familiar places, such as Southbank Footbridge, Melbourne General Cemetery and Flagstaff train station.
5. Charlotte’s Web (2006)
Another collaboration between Australia, Germany and the US, the fairy tale-like movie was filmed in the suburbs of Melbourne, including Heidelberg, Greendale, Hawthorn and Williamstown.

The fairy scene was filmed at Heidelberg West Football Club’s football ground, and the school scenes were filmed at Spotswood Primary School.
