Stars Who Made Action Movies Well Into Their 60s

Actors often get better when they age, probably because of the maturity of their characters or years of practice on screen. Though this can be said generally about acting, playing action heroes is a different story.

The rigor of the filming process is very demanding. The actors can’t cheat as the audience is very fastidious and do not have any tolerance for a double or worse, CGI-propped up faces. Having said that, we have plenty of actors over 50s who are very active in saving the big day on screen: Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr, Keanu Reeves, Andy Lau, Aaron Kwok, Donnie Yen, Jet Li, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan…

But you can’t apply the same rules to people in their 60s. At that age, your body caves in to pressure more easily – unless you are like one of them (all photos are from IMDb’s gallery):

Denzel Washington (62)

Denzel Washington turned 60 two years ago but still kicks butts. He starred in The Magnificent Seven (2016) and will play the hero again in The Equalizer 2 next year.

Bruce Willis (62)

The beloved star from Die Hard franchise is still pretty much in the game. This year, three of his action movies will be released: Once Upon a Time in Venice; Acts of Violence; Death Wish.

Jackie Chan (63)

The Hong Kong Kungfu star is also known as a great stuntman who performs most of the stunts in his own movies. As a martial artist, Chan’s roles usually involve actions. In his 60s, he made intense fight scenes in Dragon Blade (2015), Skiptrace (2016), Railway Tigers (2017) and Kungfu Yoga (2017).

This year, Chan will star in The Foreigner. A slew of action films are also announced for him: The Karate Kid 2, Shanghai Dawn (a sequel to Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights), Rush Hour 4 and Ex-Baghdad (alongside Sylvester Stallone).

Pierce Brosnan (64)

The James Bond star still has it in him! Pierce Brosnan starred in The November Man (2014), Survivor (2015) and No Escape (2015) after he turned 60. He will star alongside Jackie Chan in this year’s The Foreigner, though his role doesn’t require much action.

Liam Neeson (65)

Liam Neeson reached 60 in 2012 and continued to shoot action-packed movies: Taken 2 (2012), Non-stop (2014), Taken 3 (2014). He shows no sign of giving up at this point. Next year, he will take the lead again in Hard Powder.

Arnold Schwarzenegger (70)

One of the greatest action stars of our time, Arnold never stopped making action movies even when he was the governor of California from 2003 to 2011 (he made a brief appearance in The Expendables in 2010).

His movie career picked up pace again after his tenure as the governor and he starred in The Expendables 2 (2012), The Last Stand (2013), Escape Plan (2013), Sabotage (2014) and Terminator Genesis (2015).

Sylvester Stallone (71)

Another great action star who never seems to get enough of it, Sylvester Stallone is a symbol of action movies. After he turned 60, Stallone still kept very good shape in Rocky Balboa (2006), Rambo (2008), The Expendables (2010), The Expendables 2 (2012), Bullet to the Head (2012), Escape Plan (2013), Grudge Match (2013) and The Expendables 3 (2014).
His new movie Escape Plan 2: Hades will be released next year.

Harrison Ford (75)

Harrison Ford reached 60 fifteen years ago. Though he slowed down in the action genre, he took the lead in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) when he was 66. A sequel is already announced and reportedly to be released in 2020 when he will turn 80.

Though Sean Connery stopped acting altogether in early 2010s, he was a hero in his 60s, taking the lead roles in First Knight (1995), The Rock (1996) and Entrapment (1999).
